THE NEED FOR A BORDER WALL
Cole Rainey 01/10/2019
--President Trump’s address to the nation signified a shift in national opinion regarding the wall.
As The President addressed multiple national security threats at our southern border. He pointed out that “In the last two years, ICE officers made 266,000 arrests of aliens with criminal records including those charged or convicted of 100,000 assaults, 30,000 sex crimes, and 4,000 violent killings.” Those numbers are staggering and represent the true need for a barrier at our southern border. Many criminal illegal aliens make it across the border where there is no barrier. A barrier, steel or concrete, would deter drug and human smugglers from coming into the United States. As they would be forced to enter the Nation through a monitored port of entry as opposed to unattended areas of the southern border.
The President calls the situation at the southern border a “A crisis of the heart, and a crisis of the soul.” Innocent lives are lost every day due to illegal immigration, our communities deserve to stay safe and free from criminal illegal aliens. A barrier at the southern border is a necessity in order to solve the opioid crisis. As 90% of the heroin entering the US comes through the southern border. It's a necessity in order to stop human traffickers, as tens of thousands of children are trafficked across the border every year. It’s a necessity in order to fight MS13, who is expanding rapidly across the United States. This expansion must come to an end and MS13 must be eradicated. MS13’s motto is rape, control, kill and their terror has lead to lost lives across the United States. How much blood must be shed in order for congress to do its job and secure the border?
Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi all supported fencing/barriers at the southern border in the past. However, now that President Trump is in office, they must resist everything he does vehemently. The wall will help secure the border and the cost pales in comparison to the rest of the budget. Making up 0.01% of federal spending, the wall’s cost is measly. We need border security, criminal illegal aliens must be apprehended and taken off our streets and the wall is a cornerstone for making that happen.
Illegal immigration is a national security issue, not an issue of government compassion. In a recent press conference with border patrol officials President Trump introduced National Border Patrol Council President Brandon Judd, who served as a Border Patrol agent for 21 years. He spoke on the importance of a wall or physical barrier on the southern border, “I can personally tell you, from the work that I have done on the southwest border, that physical barriers, that walls actually work. You hear a lot of talk that there are experts that say that walls don’t work. I promise you that if you interview Border Patrol agents, they will tell you that walls work.” He continued, “I worked in Naco, Arizona, for 10 years. We didn’t have physical barriers in Naco, and illegal immigration and drug smuggling was absolutely out of control. We built those walls, those physical barriers, and illegal immigration dropped exponentially. Anywhere that you look, where we have built walls, they have worked. They have been an absolute necessity for Border Patrol agents in securing the border,” Judd said.
A physical barrier would funnel all potential illegal immigrants to ports of entry so they can be vetted. To paraphrase what Trump said in the press conference recently, having drones in the sky will help us get nice pictures of the illegals crossing over but does nothing to stop them. Human traffickers, drug smugglers, gang members and disease carrying individuals are among those wanting to come here, illegally. All of which pose a threat to ordinary Americans. In order to protect innocent lives, securing the border is necessary.
In areas without a wall, border patrol agents have a hard time catching all the illegal immigrants attempting to cross over. As there are hundreds of miles of unsecured land with no physical barrier stopping them from coming in. In the state of Arizona, an illegal immigrant is twice as likely to commit a crime than a natural born citizen. Tens of thousands of kids are being sex trafficked across the southern border every year. 90% of all the heroin coming into the US comes across the southern border. The cost of illegal immigration is 115 billion dollars a year to US taxpayers. We have 56,000 illegal immigrants in our federal prison system, and countless in our state penitentiary system. Now is the time to secure the border and restore order to our immigration system.
Fairness is another important element in building the wall. It’s not fair to the people in Belarus or Bangladesh who have to fill out an application, wait in line, not commit a crime and wait sometimes years to come into the United States the correct way for people to just be permitted to cross over illegally.
Borders represent, as Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk states, “Where good ideas end and bad ideas start”. Just look at East and West Berlin or North and South Korea, their borders signify a difference of ideology and culture. American culture is significantly different than Mexican culture. Mexican culture ought to be appreciated and understood, but our culture is different and has outpaced them over the last 50 years. As Mexico suffered their most violent year in history in 2018, with a staggering 29,168 killings. Mexico is characterized as one of the most dangerous countries in the world.
To say we should have open borders and some idea of transferable citizenship cheapens the American culture and identity and is unfair to those who have waited in line for years to become a citizen. It is time to secure the border and protect American citizens.
Newly sworn in Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi virtue-signaled to her constituency by calling the wall “immoral” in a recent interview yet she declined to comment on the murder of Law Enforcement Officer Ronil Singh by an illegal alien in her home state of California last week. Singh was a legal immigrant who came into the United States the right way. His murderer on the other hand shouldn’t have been here in the first place. Instances like these would become far less frequent with enhanced border security.
Democrats opposed Kate’s law, they oppose the wall, they oppose ICE and they oppose anything President Trump wants to do. They would rather put American lives at risk than work with President Trump. Despite what Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer said, regarding his previous stance on a wall is the polar opposite of his view, now that Trump stands strong on Border Security. After all, he did vote for the ‘secure fence act’ of 2006, which covered the construction of 700 miles of fencing across the southern border costing a total of 25 billion dollars. Schumer also supported the 'gang of eight' bill in 2013 which allocated 8 billion dollars toward reinforcing the barriers created with the secure fence act.
President Trump is not part of the political establishment, therefore, the Democrats will oppose anything and everything he does. Even if it means putting American lives at risk and shutting the government down indefinitely.
As an American I feel unsafe knowing our Southern Border is unsecured. Knowing that innocent children are being smuggled across the border and sold into sex slave rings sickens me. Democrats refusing to work with President are making a big mistake with the American people.
Securing vast areas of unsecured land would funnel all potential illegal immigrants to ports of entry so they can be vetted. What is a country without borders? Not a country at all, simply a piece of land. The question is if someone was coming into your house would you want them to come through the front door or the window? Obviously the front door, the same applies at our border. America is our home and we should delineate who is permitted to enter our home.
I hope President Trump declares a national emergency to build the wall. If Democrats refuse to work with him, and they refuse to listen to the people, then President Trump should take action to secure our border.
As President Trump said referring to wealthy politicians, “They don’t build walls because they hate the people on the outside but because they love the people on the inside.” President Trump loves Americans and wants to protect them. By building the wall the President would keep criminals out of the country and allow us to vet those seeking to come into the nation. The wall needs to get built and President Trump owes it to his supporter, to fulfill his campaign promise of building the wall.
